St. Andrew’s Church

Priest-in-Charge: Reverend Mary Garbutt

Church Wardens: Charles Irving-Swift and Penny Maybank

A monthly newsletter is delivered to each house, containing information about Church services in the seven parishes in our group (Arthingworth, Draughton, East Farndon, Great Oxendon, Harrington and Thorpe Underwood, Lamport and Maidwell), plus news of other village events.

This is edited by Nuala Ryan.

News for inclusion in the magazine is required by 20th of the month.

Floodlights

The PCC has decided to leave the floodlights on at the church for the whole winter period this year as it brightens up the approach to the village during the colder months.

As a result a request has gone out for donations to cover the additional cost. Envelopes are available in the church and from John Maybank. Donations can be gift aided if appropriate.

We have decided to offer tea, coffee, soft drinks etc after all the 9.30 services, and "special" services throughout the year. We hope you will be able to stay a little while and enjoy each other's company!

If you would be willing to join those who have already volunteered to take on this responsibility please will you contact Cecile who has agreed to oversee the venture and draw up a rota.

Refreshments

The space in the bell tower has been converted so that children who have come to join in our services and who might not wish to be involved for all of the time have somewhere to go.

They can draw and colour, play games, chat quietly to a friend and the little ones can play with the soft toys.

We would like to add reading to this so if anyone in Arthingworth has any suitable books (or games) which their children have grown out of, or anything else you think we might use, we would welcome them.

If you are able to help, please contact Shirley who will be happy to arrange a time to collect them.

No one knows precisely how old our village church is, but it seems certain part of the present building was standing here in the 12th century.

The south chapel and aisle were probably added in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The tower is of the 15th century.

The whole church was extensively renovated in Victorian times. The roof of the chancel is a particularly good example of a Victorian reproduction of medieval work, although owing to lack of sufficient funds at the time it was never painted as the architect had envisaged.

A sixth bell was installed for the Millennium, and now bellringers come to Arthingworth to ring a a full peal. The funding for this was grant-aided and additional money raised by public subscription and private donations.

We welcome you to our church and, in a building hallowed by over 700 years of Christian worship, invite you to meditate on St. Andrew - the fisherman who became the 'fisher of men' - for Christ.
